Maracatu de Baque Virado is an artistic manifestation of popular and carnival culture from Pernambuco, Brazil. It arose from Afro-Brazilian and indigenous Brazilian cultural and spiritual traditions and the coronation of the kings and queens of the Congo.
Despite being Brazil’s Cultural Patrimony, Maracatu Nations struggle financially while still providing year-round community support—distributing food and educating their youth. Sadly, many Maracatu Nations have disappeared over the years because they couldn’t afford to keep going.
We’ve seen firsthand how donations make a HUGE difference!
